When the barometer drops and serious weather is forecast the distance between the normally disparate groups of 'racers' and 'cruisers' is at its smallest with cruisers perhaps being in the favoured position of being somewhat better prepared- and with more equipment on board to problem solve with. However, having the equipment on board and actually knowing how to use it are two completely different things- I hope in this lecture to share my experience of heavy weather gained over 250,000Nm and two racing circumnavigations in an attempt to demonstrate new technologies, reveal old practices and clear up common misconceptions- all with the aim of making sailors safer when the wind rips 45kts....

About Chris Stanmore-Major

Chris Stanmore-Major is an internationally recognized round-the world solo sailor and sail training instructor. As of 2016 he has sailed approximately 240,000Nm (500,000km- the distance to the moon) in yachts ranging from 45' - 150'. This mileage includes two races around the world - first as the skipper of 'Qingdao' the Chinese entry in the 2009/10 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and once solo in 2010/11 in the Velux 5 Oceans Race sailing ‘Spartan’ an IMOCA Open 60. Chris's everyday responsibilities are now as the CEO and skipper of Spartan Ocean Racing & Training a company that provides individual and corporate opportunities to engage in some of the world's greatest sailing events and oceanic voyages.
