The 500 Mb Chart Workshop (3-hour workshop)

Vancouver Boat Show
10:15 AM - 1:15 PM - SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2017
Room 147 / VIP Room, located on the main field level of BC Place

Seminar Details

We broke down the different components of the upper-level (air) 500 mb chart, from the earlier free seminar “Introduction to the 500 mb Chart” . Now we go into deeper discussion to further your understanding for self-reliant marine weather forecasting & routing. Specifically: Identifying upper level troughs & ridges as depicted on 500 mb charts. How 500 mb controls sea-level surface low & high pressure systems (e.g., 500 mb influences as to where surface low & high pressure weather systems originate, intensify, weaken, & move). Discussion & illustration of what a weather pattern is, & how to identify & recognize the four (4) basic 500 mb flow patterns (two of them depicted below). Develop a culture of routinely accessing both 500 mb & their companion at sea-level surface pressure charts, & annotating specific features that will allow one to clearly see their connected inter-relationships. Introduce the A.B, C, & D zones associated with a 500 mb chart & applied in the “ Understanding Weather & Cruise Decision Making Workshop”, as discussed in detail in Heavy Weather Avoidance Prerequisite: attend the free seminar “Introduction to the 500 Mb Chart.”...
